Checking an Academic Discussion post

Academic Discussion answers are checked in the LingoLeap app rather than on this page. You write your post under the real 10-minute timer to a prompt from the question bank and get the four criterion scores and comments, a revised version of your post and a list of grammar corrections. For topics to practice with, see the Academic Discussion topics.

How far to trust an AI score

Use the score to compare your own drafts, not to predict your official result. The checker runs the same scoring module as the LingoLeap app and applies the published 2026 criteria, but LingoLeap has not published a study comparing its scores with official ETS scores, so this page makes no accuracy claim.

The most useful output is the feedback, not the number. The comments and quoted corrections show which criterion held the score down. For example, an email with clean grammar that uses the wrong register for a professor loses points on social conventions, and no amount of proofreading fixes that.

FAQ

Is there a free TOEFL writing checker?
Yes, for the Write an Email task. On this page you pick one of 5 practice prompts, write your email and get a 0-5 score with a comment and quoted corrections for each of the four rubric criteria. It is free, needs no account and allows 3 checked emails per day. Academic Discussion answers are checked in the LingoLeap app.
Can I paste my own TOEFL essay into the checker?
Not on the free checker. It scores an email against the prompt it was written for, so it only accepts answers to its 5 built-in prompts. To check answers to more prompts, or an Academic Discussion post, use the app, which grades every prompt in its question bank.
How accurate is an AI TOEFL writing score?
Treat it as a practice estimate, not a prediction of your official score. The checker uses the same scoring module as the LingoLeap app and scores against the published 2026 rubric criteria, but LingoLeap has not published a study comparing its scores with official ETS scores, so we make no accuracy claim. The criterion comments and quoted corrections are the most useful part: they show what to change.
What does the checker look at?
For Write an Email: content (whether your details support the purpose of the email), syntactic and lexical variety, social conventions (register and politeness for this recipient) and accuracy. For Academic Discussion: content and elaboration, response to the discussion, syntactic and lexical variety, and language accuracy. Each is scored 0-5.
Does it correct grammar?
Each criterion's feedback quotes sentences from your email with a suggested correction and a short explanation. For line-by-line grammar correction of any text, use the free grammar checker; the full rewrite and grammar pass for a TOEFL answer are part of the app.
